The Mountain Gods Have Shined Down Upon Us

Image
The end is near.  We have 2 more hikes left and the weather forecast is not looking so favourable.  In fact, all week the weather was not looking promising, and given the ride up through that wicked storm, none of us were all that optimistic.  However, to date the weather has been perfect.  Sun has been out, not too hot, but definitely not cold and no rain.  We have been blessed.  The hottest day so far was our day off which was also perfect.  But now, Thursday and Friday have high percentage of rain, all day and thunderstorms expected in the afternoons.  YAY!   Our hikes are roughly 7 hours and there are some steep ascents and descents in very interesting terrain.  Rain would make for a very challenging and less pleasant day.  So every evening at dinner, Egle joins us and gives up a debrief on the next day.  She wants to start a little earlier in hopes of being off the peak by the time the storm starts.  Thursday i...

Fly Like An Eagle

Here at the chalet we have our own little kitchen where we have the drinks and ice and such.  Also in this kitchen is a bread machine.  It's an odd thing to have in France and I've never seen Zoe use it, nor do we eat bread here, it's all baguette and croissants.  So what's with the bread machine? So looking at it the other day it looked to have these weird cubes inside and I couldn't figure them out... Why is that in the bread machine?  It looks like ice.  I never thought much about it again until this morning when I went to get ice for my water bottle for today's hike and noticed the cubes were the same shape at the one's I'd seen in the bread machine.  So I go back to look and sure enough now it's full on them.  Oh shit- it's an ice maker, not a bread maker!  I thought the ice was being made in the freezer where we were getting the ice from, I never realized someone was just transferring it there.  Apparently I wasn't the only one co...

Well... We Came Here For The Views!

So far, aside from the wicked storm we hit on the way up to Chamonix, the weather has been exceptional.  I am going to be rocking a pretty sweet tan when I get home.  Nights have been a little warm to sleep, but the hikes are kicking our butts and so fatigue seems to win out.  We have been having a bit of a lack of warm water situation, but with a little planning, seems like we've got it figured out.  Only one showerer at a time seems to do it. Every morning I open the blind up in our room to the most spectacular view.  Morning and night, it's always different and always jaw dropping.  You feel like you can just reach out and touch the mountain.  And well, we did come here for the views afterall, but never expected to be this lucky.  The food is simply outstanding.  If we were paying for these meals in a restaurant, I can only imagine how much our dinners would be.  And even the lunches are terrific.  Zoey has a spread of diffe...
